“History is the business of identifying momentous events from the comfort of a high-back chair. With the benefit of time, the historian looks back and points to a date in the manner of a gray-haired field marshal pointing to a bend in a river on a map: There it was, he says . The turning point. the decisive factor. The fateful day that fundamentally altered all that was to follow. “ – A Gentleman in Moscow
I often look back and think how my life could have been had something slightly different happened on certain occasions. Such as, what if I had not gone to a certain wedding almost 16 years ago, and certain events not transpired. What if I had then studied harder and gotten certain grades or maybe if I had focused more during university I could have been a better doctor. Or what if I had not said something to a certain someone a few years back, that resulted in the breaking of an old friendship in blink of an eye. Or what if I had paid more heed to my teachers, friends and well wishers on numerous occasions. I am sure there are many such events in your life as well. It is only human to do some introspection once in a while.
However, at the same time, it’s also very important to not live in the past. The purpose of visiting the past should only be like an observer, observing events like a third person, and then returning to the future, and making sure you don’t repeat the same mistakes again. Mistakes are events that occur just once. For they are not mistakes the second time onward. They then become choices.
